We headed to Locko Park in Spondon, Derby, for the engagement shoot. I’d never been before, but it was great to visit as my Mum grew up nearby and had told me about playing on the estate as a child. The grounds are lovely, and although the house is private there are plenty of opportunities for photographs by the lake or in the fields nearby.
On the evening that I met Mel and Mark there we were especially lucky with the weather. It was warm and the sun was just dipping in the sky, creating that beautiful ‘golden hour’ that photographers, and especially wedding photographers, are always hoping for. Perfect for an engagement shoot.
For myself an engagement shoot, (or pre-wedding shoot if you prefer), is all about getting to know the couple before the big day itself, as I like to arrive on the wedding day and know that the bride and groom are familiar with me and my camera. It allows everybody to feel that little bit more relaxed. I loved hearing more about Mel and Mark’s lives and their relationship, whilst taking advantage of the beautiful evening to snap some beautifully romantic portraits. I think that their personalities really shone through in the finished images, which is always what I’m striving for.
The sun was almost below the horizon by the time we finished up by the lake. I shot a couple of silhouettes with the last of the sun in the background, and then Melissa (my second shooter) helped me quickly rig a few flash-lit portraits too, before we headed back down the drive to our cars.
