One of the questions I’m asked most often when my clients are planning their pre-wedding shoot is: where should we go? There’s no right or wrong answer to that really; it depends on the kind of shoot you want. I’ve done engagement shoots in bars, at Alton Towers, at a Christmas market, on an ice rink and on the edge of a cliff. But if you don’t have anywhere in particular in mind, there are lots of great places in Derby that are ideal for a romantic pre-wedding photoshoot. I thought I might share some ideas over the coming weeks for great spot around Derbyshire, starting with Elvaston Castle.
The grounds of the stately house, (former home of the Earl of Harrington) offer a diverse range of locations for an engagement shoot. There’s a lake, boat house, woodland, formal gardens, church, the house itself, a courtyard and stables and, of course, the fantastic rockwork structures. I’ve got brilliant memories of climbing all over those as a kid!
Such a variety of backdrops means that we can achieve a range of different styles within one shoot. The only thing to bear in mind is that it is a very popular venue for a family day out, so it’s best to arrange the engagement session for early in the morning or later one afternoon. Since that’s the best time of the day for photography anyway – in terms of the light – that shouldn’t be a problem.
Here’s a selection of my favourite images from previous pre-wedding sessions at Elvaston Castle featuring Jordan and Steve, Alicia and Jason and Alison and Dan.
What other location in Derby would you suggest for a pre-wedding shoot? I’m always on the lookout for a novel idea or an interesting location! Let me know in the comments below.
