I’ve challenged myself to post a photo a day for the next year, (maybe beyond) and explain the story behind it, and why I love it. Today’s featured image is from Emily and Jeremy’s wedding at Darwin Lakes in Derbyshire.
Emily and Jeremy are simply made for each other, and nothing demonstrates that more than the moment in this image: they’re simply so happy, contented and comfortable with each other, and completely in love, that just for an instant it didn’t matter that there was a 6’2” bloke half-buried in the undergrowth taking their picture!
I’d estimate that 90% of my clients tell me that they really don’t like being in front of the camera, and I can really empathise. I’m much happier behind the lens; in fact, it’s one of the benefits of being a professional photographer – people usually ask me to take the photograph rather than be in it. At least, I think that’s the reason they do that…
The engagement shoot often helps in this regard; the opportunity to spend some time together and take some photos usually reassures couples that actually they are not genetically unphotogenic, and that I know what I’m doing! Occasionally couples find it hard to relax in front of the camera though and interact naturally with each other. My job is to try and break the ice, help them to forget that we’re on a shoot, and just enjoy time with each other.
Of course, on the wedding day, everything becomes much easier. Despite having usually never done it before, the whole wedding day usually feels very comfortable, and naturally romantic, which helps to create the connection I’m looking for in my photos. The wine probably helps too!
This photo of Emily and Jeremy from their Derbyshire Peak District wedding at Darwin Lakes is a great example of how natural wedding portrait photography can be. Myself, Emily and Jeremy had walked out into some woodland surround the lake, and I found a small clearing where the autumn sun was just breaking through. I suggested the pose which would work best for the light, and then just let them be themselves: a couple completely in love on the happiest day of their lives!
